From the Sideline

So the season is underway and by now you as Coach, should be well underway with training your team. Or are you just beginning to get started?

To help your season run smoothly, here are a few tips.

Appoint someone as Manager
This person will be the one who gets all of thehousekeeping stuff and needs to be organised... all the exciting stuff that the coach can delegate to the manager while the coach can get on with coaching.

Start as you mean to go on, set a team policy or contract
This is a very important tool for managing situations that invariably creep up on teams during the season. Ask the team for input, as it is important that they feel they are contributing. A example is what the team consequences are, if a team member is absent from training twice in a row? Do they get to play on Saturday or do they stand down? These are the type of scenarios that a coach has to be prepared for.

Plan your training sessions and game plans in writing in advance
This helps you from week to week assess what is need for training and what the Saturday game has exposed within the team.
Also, if you are away, the Manager can step in and take over without affecting the team.

Have fun on and off court
As coach, it is up to you to try and inject fun into the trainings. Don't take things too seriously as inevitably, players will get bored. Keep upbeat and involve players in organising fun activities off court.

Encourage your players to look outside the square of playing netball
Most Centres will have coaching courses or umpiring courses. Get your players to attend. This not only helps players expand their knowledge of the game but more importantly, it helps the player-coach relationship by creating a common empathy of knowledge.

The season comes around all too quickly, but before you know it, you are also at the end of it, all too soon. Take the time to thank your players and parents by having a function to mark the end of the season. This is an ideal opportunity to network and start planning for next year.
